Saxton Oval Pavilion And Administration Building

Project Overview

The client wanted a ‘landmark’ building for a modest budget in a very tight programme. The design and documentation was completed in around four months, as required, and construction was finished in time for the Summer cricket season (2011 – 2012). The building supports a number of user groups, so we ran several workshops with their representatives to ensure compliance with the budget. A list of items that were ‘desirable’ but fell outside the initial brief and budget was created. We were fortunate to be able to include a majority of these items by the end of the contract.

We innovatively used structural steel with curved portals, formed by cutting the flanges out separately and welding them together to achieve the required radius curve. Different roofing materials were tested for durability, cost effectiveness, and curvability. Curved plywood and corrugated iron cladding together with the steel portals creates the curved outer skin ‘sandwich’.  The plywood also forms bracing bays between the portals. Plywood clad chiller panel doors make a lightweight but sturdy security door.  Colourful commercial tiles arranged in asymmetrical patterns on the toilet walls create a vibrant atmosphere. Suspended acoustic panels in the main lounge area and walls effectively reduce echo. The external sliding doors over the apertures into the changing, storage and toilet spaces effectively close the building down. Rain runs into custom gutters above openings or continues down the sides of the curve to pebble filled water pits with ground drains, while marine-grade clear sealer protects the plywood.  LED low energy lighting, the predominantly natural ventilation, gas-on-demand hot water heating, and insulation where people spend the most time, all contribute to the low on-going energy consumption and comfort levels in the building.
